IN TSCHERCHA DA STIZIS

"In July 2022, a collection of 150 Romansh poems accompanied me in Sta. Maria, most written in Puter and Vallader. I seek poems that captivate with rhythm and atmosphere, carrying me away. With the guitar I play chord progressions, vary my fingerpicking and comping, constantly retune, and discover new open tunings. Joni Mitchell has always been a great inspiration.

Then the voice enters - I improvise melodies around a verse, repeat words, and loop entire passages. Slowly, a musical sketch emerges. I record it on my phone and walk to the river, where the melody begins to take shape on the banks of the Rom.

I explore instruments and colours of sound: a 1950s Gibson, a Fender Jazzmaster, a nylon-string classical guitar, two synthesizers, and an Indian harmonium, all finding their place in the Stalla d’immez. Even a clavichord from the Chasa Parli joins in. I shift tempos - from slow ballads to driving uptempo forms. Then Samuel Baur sets up a professional studio in the stable, and we start recording, capturing the very groove of the Stalla d’immez.

Two more musicians join: David Aebli with violin and bouzouki, Lukas Langengger with banjo and mandolin. The songs take on new colours, the circles close, and the sketches become songs."
